Geotextile Installation Instructions
How to install geotextile fabric
Discover the simplicity of geotextile fabric installation with our comprehensive guide and beneficial tips. In our illustrative example,
Step 1 - Prep the road surface
Begin by excavating the roadway to the predetermined elevation. Ensure comprehensive compaction of your subgrade by eliminating air pockets and thoroughly tightening the soil.
Step 2 - Unroll the reinforcement geotextile fabric
Carefully unroll the geotextile fabric onto the compacted subgrade, ensuring it remains free of wrinkles and folds. Adhere to engineer-specified overlapping instructions. For projects requiring stitched seams, Cherokee offers factory-seamed rolls in wider widths—contact your Cherokee representative for pricing.
Step 3 - Sewing the geotextile fabric
On-site stitching of the fabric is necessary, employing a dual-thread lock stitch to prevent unraveling. We provide equipment options for purchase or rental to facilitate stitching on the job. Depending on the engineer's discretion, you can choose a prayer seam, j-seam, or butterfly seam; in this instance, a j-seam is recommended. We advocate for executing two stitches per seam to ensure installation integrity.
Step 4 - Apply Aggregate
Carefully distribute the aggregate to the specified thickness, avoiding direct equipment contact with the engineered fill. Verify that full compaction is achieved before proceeding to the final stage.
Step 5 - Lay Asphalt
With the subbase in place, you are now prepared to proceed with your pavement layer, tailored to meet the specific requirements of your project.

Incredible Geotextile Functions
1. SeparationCapabilities
The geotextile's separation function is crucial in road construction. It prevents the mixing of two adjacent soils, such as ensuring fine subgrade soil remains distinct from base course aggregates, thereby preserving the drainage and strength attributes of the aggregate material.
Applicable Areas Include:
- Between subgrade and stone base in both unpaved and paved roads and airfields.
- Between subgrade layers in railroads.
- Between landfill liners and stone base courses.
- Between geomembranes and sand drainage layers.
2. Filtration
The geotextile-soil system balances liquid flow while limiting soil loss across the geotextile plane, thanks to its inherent porosity and permeability.
Porosity and permeability are key geotextile properties crucial for infiltration action.
A typical application demonstrating the filtration function is its use in pavement edge drains.
3. Reinforcement
Geotextiles enhance soil tensile strength, akin to how steel strengthens concrete. This strength increase occurs through three mechanisms:
- Lateral restraint via interfacial friction between the geotextile and soil or aggregate.
- Encouraging the formation of an alternate, higher shear strength surface for potential bearing failure planes.
- Providing membrane-type support for wheel loads.
4. Sealing
A non-woven geotextile layer is imbued between old and new asphalt layers, absorbing asphalt to create a waterproof membrane and reducing vertical water infiltration into the pavement structure.
Weight and Environmental Impact Analysis:
Geotextile Features: Geotextiles are exceptionally light, minimizing structural load and environmental impact.
Reinforced Concrete Attributes: Concrete structures typically have greater weight, necessitating a more substantial foundation and incurring a larger environmental impact during production.
Maintenance and Durability Insights:
Geotextile Advantages: Our superior geotextile solutions are engineered to require significantly less maintenance over time, showcasing remarkable resistance to cracking and deterioration, ensuring long-lasting performance.
Reinforced Concrete: Reinforced concrete structures, while robust, may unfortunately necessitate regular upkeep due to issues such as cracks, corrosion, and other commonly encountered concerns.
Installation time:
Geotextile: Experience the advantage of quick geotextile installation, allowing you to accelerate project timelines and achieve faster completion with ease.
Reinforced Concrete: The curing period required for concrete can extend project timelines, potentially affecting critical deadlines.
