Geotextile Installation Instructions
How to Install Geotextile Fabric
Witness the ease of geotextile installation with our step-by-step guidance and helpful tips. Let us take you through the process:
Step 1 - Prep the Road Surface
Begin by excavating the roadway to your desired elevation. Ensure that your subgrade is fully compacted, with all air pockets eliminated and the soil tightly packed.
Step 2 - Unroll the Reinforcement Geotextile Fabric
Carefully roll out the geotextile fabric onto the compacted subgrade, ensuring it's free from wrinkles and folds. Follow the engineer's overlapping instructions. For added convenience, Cherokee offers pre-sewn fabric options. Contact us for pricing on wider factory-seamed rolls.
Step 3 - Sewing the Geotextile Fabric
On-site stitching of the fabric is required for this project. Employ a dual thread lock stitch to secure seams and prevent unraveling. We provide equipment for purchase or rental to facilitate on-site stitching. Choose from prayer seam, j-seam, or butterfly seam, with a j-seam recommended for this example. Double stitches are advised to ensure seam integrity during installation.
Step 4 - Apply Aggregate
Lay the aggregate to the designated thickness, ensuring no equipment traverses the engineered fill. Verify that the fill is fully compacted before proceeding to the final stage.
Step 5 - Lay Asphalt
With your subbase in place, you are now ready to proceed with the pavement layer(s), tailored to your project's specific requirements.

The Multifaceted Functions of Geotextile
1. Separation Mastery
Geotextile's separation function is pivotal in road construction, effectively preventing the intermixing of adjacent soils. It maintains drainage and reinforces strength by keeping fine subgrade soil distinct from base course aggregates. This ensures the aggregate material retains its optimal drainage and strength characteristics.
Extensive Applicable Areas Include:
- Strategically placed between subgrade and stone base in both unpaved and paved roads, as well as airfields.
- Implemented between subgrades in railroad constructions.
- Utilized between landfills and stone base courses to enhance stability.
- Deployed between geomembranes and sand drainage layers for superior performance.
2. Filtration Excellence
Achieves a geotextile-to-soil system equilibrium, facilitating effective liquid flow while minimizing soil loss across the geotextile plane.
Designed with porosity and permeability as primary attributes, geotextiles showcase superior infiltration capabilities.
A classic application: geotextile use in pavement edge drains, effectively highlighted by the accompanying figure.
3. Reinforcement Innovation
Incorporating geotextile enhances soil tensile strength, akin to steel's role in concrete. This strength increase is achieved through three key mechanisms:
- Lateral restraint via interfacial friction between geotextile and soil/aggregate.
- Guiding potential bearing surface failure planes to develop higher shear strength surfaces.
- Providing membrane-like support for wheel loads.
4. Sealing Proficiency
A non-woven geotextile layer, when impregnated between existing and new asphalt layers, absorbs asphalt to form a waterproof barrier, effectively minimizing vertical water infiltration into the pavement structure.
Weight Considerations and Environmental Impact:
Geotextile Solution: Lightweight nature reduces structural load, thereby minimizing environmental impact.
Reinforced Concrete Drawbacks: Heaviness of concrete structures demands stronger foundations and increases environmental footprint during production.
Maintenance and Longevity:
Geotextile Advantage: Enjoy the benefit of reduced long-term upkeep with our geotextile solutions, designed to resist cracking and deterioration, ensuring enduring performance and reliability.
Reinforced Concrete: Anticipate potential upkeep with reinforced concrete due to its susceptibility to cracks, corrosion, and the myriad of issues that commonly plague concrete structures.
Installation Time:
Geotextile: Experience rapid project completion with the swift installation of geotextiles, enabling you to meet tight deadlines effortlessly.
Reinforced Concrete: Expect project timelines to extend with reinforced concrete, as curing times can delay completion and impact your schedule.
