Geotextile Installation Instructions

How to install geotextile fabric

Discover the simplicity of installation with our step-by-step guide and invaluable tips. Let us walk you through the process with ease.

Step 1 - Prep the road surface

Begin by excavating the roadway to your desired elevation. Thoroughly compact the subgrade, ensuring all air is expelled and the soil is fully compacted.

Step 2 - Unroll the reinforcement geotextile fabric

Carefully roll out the geotextile fabric on the compacted subgrade, ensuring a smooth surface free from wrinkles and folds. Follow the engineer's specifications for fabric overlap. Consult Cherokee for pre-sewn, factory seamed rolls in wider widths to match your requirements.

Step 3 - Sewing the geotextile fabric

For this task, the fabric must be stitched on-site using a dual-thread lock stitch to prevent unraveling. Choose from prayer seams, j-seams, or butterfly seams as recommended by your engineer. In this example, we employ a j-seam with two stitches on each seam to ensure robust installation.

Step 4 - Apply Aggregate

Distribute your aggregate to the specified thickness, ensuring no equipment traverses the engineered fill. Confirm full compaction of the fill before proceeding to the next step.

Step 5 - Lay Asphalt

With your subbase in place, you are prepared to lay the pavement layer(s) as specified by your project requirements.

Geotextile Function

1. SeparationSeparation
In road construction, geotextile's separation function prevents the mixing of adjacent soils, such as separating fine subgrade soil from the aggregates in the base course, thus preserving drainage and strength characteristics.
Some of the applicable areas are:
  • Between subgrade and stone base in unpaved and paved roads and airfields.
  • Between subgrade in railroads.
  • Between landfills and stone base courses.
  • Between geomembranes and sand drainage layers.
2. Filtration
Geotextiles maintain a balanced geotextile-to-soil system that facilitates adequate liquid flow while minimizing soil loss across the geotextile plane.
The porosity and permeability of geotextiles play a crucial role in their filtration capabilities.
A notable example of filtration is a geotextile used in a pavement edge drain, optimizing drainage capabilities.
3. Reinforcement
Integrating geotextile into soil enhances its tensile strength, akin to the role of steel in concrete. This is achieved through three mechanisms:
  • Lateral restraint via interfacial friction between geotextile and soil/aggregate.
  • Altering the potential bearing surface failure plane to create a stronger surface.
  • Supporting wheel loads through a membrane effect.
4. Sealing
Between existing and new asphalt layers, a non-woven geotextile layer absorbs asphalt, forming a waterproofing membrane that reduces water flow into the pavement.

Weight and Environmental Impact:
Geotextile: Lightweight geotextiles decrease the load on existing structures and minimize environmental impact.
Reinforced Concrete: Heavier concrete structures demand a robust base, leading to increased environmental impact during production.

Maintenance and Durability:
Geotextile: Geotextiles stand out with their remarkable longevity, requiring minimal upkeep over time. Their resilience to cracking and deterioration ensures enduring performance, significantly reducing maintenance needs.
Reinforced Concrete: Reinforced Concrete demands ongoing care and attention, as it is susceptible to cracks, corrosion, and other prevalent structural issues. Regular maintenance is often necessary to ensure its integrity.

Installation time:
Geotextile: Enjoy the advantage of quick and efficient installation with our geotextiles, allowing you to accelerate project timelines and achieve faster completion.
Reinforced Concrete: The curing process inherent in concrete can extend installation durations, potentially impacting project schedules and delaying deadlines.
