Geotextile Installation Instructions
How to install geotextile fabric
Allow us to demonstrate the simplicity of geotextile installation, providing valuable tips along the way. In our example,
Step 1 - Prepare the Road Surface
Begin by excavating the roadway to your desired elevation. Ensure full compaction of your subgrade, meticulously removing all air and thoroughly tightening the soil to achieve a solid foundation.
Step 2 - Unroll the Reinforcement Geotextile Fabric
Carefully roll the geotextile fabric over the compacted subgrade, ensuring it remains free from wrinkles and folds. Overlap the fabric as specified by the engineering plan. Cherokee can pre-sew the fabric to suit your requirements if a stitch seam is needed. Contact your Cherokee representative for competitive pricing on factory-seamed rolls available in wider widths.
Step 3 - Sewing the Geotextile Fabric
For this task, the fabric must be stitched on-site. Utilize a dual thread lock stitch to secure the seams and prevent unthreading. We offer equipment for purchase or rental to accomplish this. Depending on the engineer's discretion, you may select from prayer seam, j-seam, or butterfly seam. In this scenario, a j-seam is deployed. We advocate for dual stitching on each seam to ensure robust installation integrity.
Step 4 - Apply Aggregate
Spread the aggregate to the designated thickness, ensuring no machinery traverses directly on the engineered fill. Confirm full compaction of the fill as a critical final step.
Step 5 - Lay Asphalt
With the subbase successfully in place, you are now poised to lay the pavement layer or layers tailored to your specific project requirements.

Multipurpose Geotextile Functions
1. Separation
In road construction, the separation function of geotextile is indispensable. It effectively prevents the mixing of two distinct soil types, such as isolating fine subgrade soil from base course aggregates, thereby maintaining the aggregate's drainage and strength attributes.
Key Areas of Application:
- Separation between subgrade and stone base in both paved and unpaved roads and airfields.
- Application between subgrade layers in railroad construction.
- Utilized between landfills and stone base courses.
- Placed between geomembranes and sand drainage layers.
2. Filtration
Achieves a vital equilibrium in the geotextile-to-soil system, allowing for controlled liquid flow while minimizing soil loss across its plane.
Porosity and permeability are key attributes of geotextiles, essential for effective infiltration processes.
A typical application of the filtration function is in pavement edge drains, as demonstrated in accompanying visuals.
3. Reinforcement
Introducing geotextile into soil enhances tensile strength akin to steel reinforcement in concrete. The soil's strength is augmented via three key mechanisms:
- Lateral restraint through interfacial friction between geotextile and soil/aggregate.
- Creating an alternative surface with higher shear strength to counter potential failure planes.
- Membrane-type support for wheel loads.
4. Sealing
A non-woven geotextile layer is integrated between existing and new asphalt layers. It absorbs asphalt to form a waterproof membrane, significantly minimizing vertical water infiltration into the pavement structure.
Comparison of Weight and Environmental Impact:
Geotextile Benefits: Lightweight and eco-friendly, geotextiles minimize structural load and reduce environmental impact.
Reinforced Concrete Considerations: Due to their heavier nature, concrete structures require a more substantial base and contribute to a higher environmental footprint during production.
Maintenance and Durability:
Geotextile: Our superior geotextile solutions are engineered to offer exceptional longevity and require minimal upkeep over the years, significantly reducing susceptibility to cracks and wear.
Reinforced Concrete: Reinforced concrete structures often demand consistent upkeep due to their tendency to develop cracks, corrosion, and other typical deteriorations, adding to maintenance costs.
Installation time:
Geotextile: The swift and efficient installation process empowers you to expedite project timelines, enhancing productivity and meeting targets effortlessly.
Reinforced Concrete: Prolonged concrete curing times can extend project timelines significantly, potentially impacting your project deadlines and schedules.
