Geotextile Installation Instructions
How to install geotextile fabric
Discover the simplicity of geotextile installation with our convenient guide, enriched by a few valuable tips. In our illustrative example,
Step 1 - Prep the road surface
Begin by meticulously excavating the roadway to your specified elevation. Ensure thorough compaction of the subgrade, rigorously removing any trapped air to achieve a completely tightened soil base.
Step 2 - Unroll the reinforcement geotextile fabric
Carefully roll out the geotextile fabric atop the compacted subgrade, ensuring it is smooth, wrinkle-free, and devoid of folds. Overlap the fabric as directed by the engineer for optimum performance. Cherokee offers pre-sewn fabric in broader widths upon request—contact your Cherokee representative for pricing on factory-seamed rolls.
Step 3 - Sewing the geotextile fabric
For this task, in-situ fabric stitching is required. Seam the fabric with a durable dual-thread lock stitch to prevent unraveling. We provide equipment for purchase or rental to facilitate job-site stitching. Depending on the engineer's guidance, choose between a prayer seam, j-seam, or butterfly seam; in this instance, we utilize a j-seam. We advocate performing two stitches per seam to ensure steadfast performance during installation.
Step 4 - Apply Aggregate
Proceed to layer the aggregate to the stipulated thickness, ensuring that no machinery traverses directly on the engineered fill. Confirm that the fill has achieved complete compaction before progressing to the final step.
Step 5 - Lay Asphalt
You've successfully laid down your subbase, and now it's time to proceed with the pavement layer - whether it's a single layer or multiple layers, depending on your project's specific requirements.

The Multifaceted Functions of Geotextile
1. Separation Functionality
Geotextile plays a critical role in road construction by preventing soil intermixing. For instance, it separates fine subgrade soil from aggregate base layers, preserving drainage and enhancing the strength of the aggregate material.
Applicable Areas Include:
- Application between subgrade and stone base on both unpaved and paved roads and airfields.
- Extensively used between subgrade layers in railroads.
- Implementation between landfill bases and stone courses.
- Deployed between geomembranes and sand drainage layers.
2. Filtration Capabilities
Geotextiles establish a harmonious soil system, allowing optimal liquid flow while effectively minimizing soil loss across its plane.
Porosity and permeability are pivotal properties that enable the filtration action in geotextiles.
A typical application illustrating filtration is the use of geotextiles in pavement edge drains, showcasing its effectiveness.
3. Reinforcement Benefits
Introducing geotextile into the soil is akin to reinforcing concrete with steel, significantly enhancing the soil's tensile strength. This is achieved through three mechanisms:
- Provides lateral restraint via interfacial friction between geotextile and soil or aggregate.
- Compels the potential bearing surface failure plane to develop a stronger alternate shear strength surface.
- Acts as a membrane for supporting wheel loads.
4. Sealing Efficiency
A non-woven geotextile layer, nestled between existing and new asphalt layers, absorbs asphalt forming a waterproofing membrane, drastically reducing vertical water flow into the pavement.
Environmental Impact and Weight Considerations:
Geotextile Advantages: Geotextiles are lightweight, reducing the load on existing structures and minimizing environmental impact.
Reinforced Concrete Drawbacks: Concrete structures are heavier, demanding a robust base and contributing to a greater environmental footprint during production.
Maintenance and Durability:
Geotextile: Geotextiles stand out with their exceptional ability to minimize maintenance needs over time, given their robust resistance to cracking and general wear and tear. This resilience ensures long-lasting performance, making them a preferred solution in various applications.
Reinforced Concrete: Reinforced concrete structures, while strong, often present challenges with regular maintenance needs due to issues like cracks, corrosion, and typical concrete vulnerabilities. This demands consistent attention to ensure structural integrity.
Installation time:
Geotextile: The swift installation process of geotextiles significantly accelerates project timelines, allowing you to achieve project milestones and completion at a faster pace than traditional methods.
Reinforced Concrete: The extended curing time required for concrete can introduce delays, potentially impacting project deadlines and schedules, thus affecting overall project efficiency.
