Geotextile Installation Instructions
How to install geotextile fabric
Discover the effortless process of geotextile installation with our clear guide and practical tips. Follow our step-by-step example,
Step 1 - Prep the road surface
Start by excavating the roadway to the desired elevation. Ensure complete compaction of your subgrade by removing air pockets and thoroughly tightening the soil to achieve optimal results.
Step 2 - Unroll the reinforcement geotextile fabric
Carefully unroll the geotextile fabric onto the compacted subgrade, ensuring it remains flat without wrinkles or folds. Overlap according to engineering directives. Cherokee provides pre-sewn fabric options for stitch seams—contact your Cherokee representative for pricing on wider, factory-seamed rolls.
Step 3 - Sewing the geotextile fabric
On-site fabric stitching is necessary for this task. Employ a dual-thread lock stitch to secure the seams, preventing any unraveling. Our stitching equipment is available for purchase or rental. Choose from prayer, j-seam, or butterfly seams at the engineer's discretion. Here, we showcase a j-seam, recommending dual stitches on each seam to ensure the integrity of the installation.
Step 4 - Apply Aggregate
Spread the aggregate to the specified thickness, ensuring to avoid direct equipment contact with the engineered fill. Achieve complete compaction before moving to the final step.
Step 5 - Lay Asphalt
Elevate your project execution by progressing to the pavement layer following the establishment of your subbase. This step is adaptable, allowing for either a singular or multiple-layer approach, each designed to deliver remarkable durability and performance tailored to your specific project needs.

Exploring the Multifaceted Functions of Geotextile:
1. Separation
In road construction, geotextiles are indispensable, preventing the mixing of distinct soil layers. By maintaining separation between fine subgrade soil and aggregate materials, they ensure drainage efficiency and strengthen base courses, safeguarding structural integrity and extending infrastructure lifespan.
Ideal Application Scenarios for Maximum Efficiency:
- Perfect for installation between subgrade and stone base in both unpaved and paved roadways, as well as airfields, ensuring stability and performance.
- Enhance railroad stability by integrating geotextiles between subgrade layers.
- Optimize landfill operations by placing geotextiles between landfills and stone base courses for superior separation.
- Ensure effective separation by applying geotextiles between geomembranes and sand drainage layers.
2. Filtration
Our geotextiles excel in creating a balanced geotextile-to-soil system, promoting optimal liquid flow while minimizing soil loss. This filtration capability is integral to sustainable design, supporting durability and longevity.
With key properties like porosity and permeability, our geotextiles ensure effective infiltration, delivering strength and adaptability for diverse applications.
A prime example of filtration is the geotextile application in a pavement edge drain, ensuring efficient drainage and enhanced longevity.
3. Reinforcement
Integrating geotextiles into soil construction projects significantly boosts tensile strength, akin to steel in concrete. This strength enhancement is achieved through three main mechanisms:
- Lateral restraint is provided by interfacial friction between geotextile and soil/aggregate, ensuring stability.
- Facilitates the development of an alternative high shear strength surface, which enhances durability.
- Supports wheel loads through a membrane-like action, distributing pressure effectively and minimizing impact.
4. Sealing
Our innovative non-woven geotextile layer, expertly designed for insertion between existing and new asphalt layers, transforms into a robust waterproof barrier. This strategic sealing dramatically curtails water infiltration into the pavement, significantly enhancing its longevity and structural integrity.
Weight and Environmental Impact Assessment:
Geotextile Characteristics: Our geotextiles are ingeniously lightweight, which not only reduces the load on existing structures but also contributes to a remarkably lower environmental footprint when compared to traditional material options, making them a sustainable choice.
Reinforced Concrete Traits: In contrast, concrete structures, with their inherent heaviness, demand a more substantial base and carry a significantly greater environmental impact throughout their production process.
Maintenance and Durability:
Geotextile: Our premium Geotextile boasts minimal maintenance through the years, thanks to its exceptional resistance to cracking and deterioration. This ensures a long-lasting performance that is both cost-effective and reliable.
Reinforced Concrete: Reinforced concrete structures may necessitate frequent maintenance due to their susceptibility to cracks, corrosion, and other prevalent structural challenges, thus requiring ongoing attention and resources.
Installation time:
Geotextile: The installation of our Geotextile is remarkably swift and straightforward, significantly expediting project timelines and enabling faster completion with enhanced project efficiency.
Reinforced Concrete: The mandatory curing process of concrete can markedly delay project completion, presenting potential obstacles to effective schedule management.
